Noise Narcs Promise: Whistling

I’m a child of the 80s, but that doesn’t mean I have to like it. New Wave, for the most part, isn’t my thing. But you know what is my thing?

And this song, from neo-New Wave Brooklyn group The Drums whose debut album dropped today, has it in spades. Even better: it’s surf rock. So another Noise Narcs promise: awesome songs that involve whistling (no, I’m not looking at you Juelz Sanatana).

Update: Sorry about the funky link. Song should work now.
The Drums, “Let’s Go Surfing”

See also: Blood Feathers’ “Sea Legs” (have I really not posted on Blood Feathers? Unacceptable.), Peter, Bjorn, and John’s “Young Folks”, and everything from this Spinner list except the Paul Simon. And wet your whistle in the comments with other whistling songs.

  1. Kool Keith/Tom Waits collabs are one thing, but I predict this promise will not be kept. Another list here…not all awesome songs, but “Jealous Guy” and The Clash song belong on any list we would compile. Also: the theme from The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, “Tighten Up” by The Black Keys, “Whistling Gypsy Rover” by a million early folk pop trios, and the scene from Wayne’s World where Garth whistles the theme to Star Trek before asking Wayne if he ever found Bugs Bunny attractive when he dressed up as a girl-bunny.

My promise to post all songs that I come across that feature whistling that I think are awesome? That’s a pretty easy promise to keep: I’m not talking songs I’ve talked about before.

Anyway, my next blog’s going to be devoted to that scene in Wayne’s World, which is the BEST SCENE EVER.

You can catch some more of Drew Mills’ (Blood Feathers) whistling on the Benjy Ferree’s Bobby Dee album. Check out the track “The Grips.”

  3. David G says:

Didn’t realize that was Drew Mills whistling on that track: a liked that album quite a bit when I heard it, but totally forgot about it. Thanks a ton, Mosquito Coast. Will put the album on now.

    Your namesake movie… any good?

Not that I remember. But Mosquito Coast may disagree. Like the song–very Peter, Bjorn, & John.

  4. Wow, some of that Drums album is unlistenable, “Down by the Water,” for one. The song you posted is the best.

  5. material lives says:

can someone make a mash up of the song with this vid? would be worth a day’s work.

  6. clémence says:

I hate both whistling and surfing, but i love that song….
