Kenny Pop Pop: Top Albums of 2011

Brookhaven, PA

When I listened to the Drake album, I almost defriended Matt Karp on facebook.

top ten albums

10Adele: 21

I knew from the time I heard her Tiny Desk concert, Adele was going to be in my top ten. I didn’t really expect her to be on Billboard’s.

Standout Track(s): Someone Like You, Set Fire to the Rain

09Bon Iver : Bon Iver

Really good album that it was hard for me to love. Sad Cabin Justin Vernon > Hanging out with Kanye Justin Vernon

Standout Track(s): Holocene, Calgary

08Royal Bangs: Flux Outside

The only vote cast for the Royal Bangs (guessing). This band started me on the best 4 days of my life and I couldn’t leave them off the list.

Standout Track(s): Fireball, Silver Steps, Grass Helmet

07The Dodos: No Color

These guys are good.

Standout Track(s): Don’t Stop, All Night

06Yuck: Yuck

Dinosaur Jr. Jr.

Standout Track(s): Operation, Rubber, Holing Out, Suicide Policeman

05Fleet Foxes: Helplessness Blues

Pretty tough to follow up their debut. I don’t think they were quite as successful as Arcade Fire in following up a Ken Robertson personal top ten album, but they are in the conversation with them for my favorite band.

Standout Track(s): Blue Spotted Tail, Montezuma

04Youth Lagoon: The Year of Hibernation

I’m a sucker for crescendos

Standout Track(s): 17, July, Montana

03The War on Drugs: Slave Ambient

See The Dodos

Standout Track(s): Best Night, Baby Missiles, Black Water Falls

02Girls: Father, Son, Holy Ghost

Serious contender for my number one slot, lost out because I didn’t think it reached the heights of my number 1. Solid throughout.

Standout Track(s): Vomit, Magic, Honey Boney

01M83: Hurry Up We’re Dreaming

This album went from off my radar to the middle of my top 10 and kept climbing the ladder. The more I listened to it, the more I was sure it was the best album of the year.

Standout Track(s): Intro, Midnight City, Wait, Steve McQueen, Outro

honorable mentions

Charles Bradley (had a real hard time keeping the best live performer I’ve ever seen off the list), Portugal the Man, Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, the Antlers, Gary Clark Jr, Gillian Welch

similarity to overall top ten: 27%, 4 matches

top songs

I basically just used this to talk about other bands I liked that didn’t make the top ten, my real top ten list would have minimum 4 songs from M83

10The Strokes, “Under Cover of Darkness”If only anything else on the album sounded like this

09Gillian Welch, “Scarlett Town”

08Portugal, the Man, “Everything You See”

07Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, “Senator”2nd Best Video going (note: pretty sure I only saw 2 videos this year)

06Allen Stone, “Sleep”

05The Joy Formidable, “Whirring”Ritzy Bryan is a rock star

04Hezekiah Jones, “Borrowed Heart”Best video going

03Charles Bradley and the Menahan Street Band, “Why Is It So Hard”Only my mom told me they loved me more this year than Charles Bradley.

02Tuneyards, “Bizness”I refuse to spell this band’s name “correctly”. Merrill Garbus is the winner of this year’s Win Butler Shitty Rock Star haircut award.

01M83, “Midnight City”Pitchfork nailed this
