Cydney Alexis: Top Albums of 2015

Manhattan, KS

I’ll remember this as the year Tame Impala’s Currents was released, since the album’s epic songwriting and sound tower over every other of this year’s releases. I bet many songwriters wish they’d written “I’m a Man, Woman”–it’s the kind of song you don’t know you’re allowed to write, which is what makes it ring so true. I split hairs in my #7-#10 choices; many others albums could have taken their place in this strong music year, but ultimately I went for originality of sound and songwriting and for albums that compel multiple listens. It’s based on these criteria that one of my favorite bands, Beach House, couldn’t make it into the top ten.

top ten albums

10Shamir: Ratchet

Shamir might want to consider hiring others to sing on some of the songs that challenge his vocal range, but otherwise, this is a good showing.

Standout Track(s): Vegas

09Miguel: Wildheart

An album with heart, if not consistency. The strong songs compel many listens.

Standout Track(s): The Valley

08Courtney Barnett: Sometimes I Sit and Think and Somtimes I Just Sit

I want to call this album a schadenfreude delivery system, but Bartnett’s critical eye is turned as much on herself as everyone else.

Standout Track(s): Nobody Really Cares if You Don’t Go to the Party

07Father John Misty: I Love You, Honeybear

Songs like “The Night Josh Tillman came to Our Apt.” make me question J.Tillman’s ethics and humanity, and yet they are quite obviously genius.

Standout Track(s): The Night Josh Tillman Came to our Apt.

06Made in Heights: Without My Enemy What Would I Do

On repeat.

Standout Track(s): Slow Burn

05Julia Holter: Have You in My Wilderness

Gorgeous arrangements and songwriting.

04Kurt Vile: b’lieve i’m goin down

Not as strong as his others and still stronger than most.

Standout Track(s): Pretty Pimpin

03Lower Dens: Escape From Evil

A slow burn, but impossible to ignore once you get there.

Standout Track(s): To Die in L.A.

02Jamie xx: In Colour

An album that holds up to being played as one is driving through the national parks.

Standout Track(s): Gosh

01Tame Impala: Currents

This album makes me want to pick up drums again. “I’m a Man, Woman” is so wrong and yet so right.

Standout Track(s): Eventually
