In December of 2009, back when this site was just a twinkle in our collective eye, a bunch of friends who would make up the core of Noise Narcs came together to put together the least-scientific, least-informed Best Albums of 2009 list possible. We’re doing it again this year, and we will vote for at least one album Pitchfork didn’t love, promise (lie).
In an attempt to get a few of the voters to actually, cough cough, listen to a few of the albums before they vote, we’re starting early, and the Noise Narcs editors are putting together a list of albums we think are contenders. Below, see our constantly updated list, with handy Hype Machine links to give you a taste of the band’s music.
Feel free to make suggestions in the comments.
Tallest Man on Earth – The Wild Hunt
Delta Spirit – History from Below
Jonsi – Go
Any recommended tracks for those albums, Ken?
Boy Lilikoi from the Jonsi album
You’re Going Back/A Lion’s Heart/King of Spain from TMOE
Scarecrow/Ballad of Vitaly from Delta Spirit
Mynabirds – What We Lose In the Fire We Gain In The Flood
Jonathan Franzen – Freedom (it’s on every other kind of list, why not?)
It’s on there. Google Spreadsheets is just sorting it wrong for some reason. Screw you, Google.
Choice cut for Mynabirds would be The Numbers Don’t Lie

Avi Buffalo should defently be considered
Gil Scott Heron–I’m New Here, esp. Me and the Devil.
Sleigh Bells–Treats, esp. Infinity Guitars, Crown on the Ground.
Also, I second the Jónsi rec.
surfer blood but no foals? not sure if either is totally exceptional as an album, but i think foals is superior
I haven’t listened to the Foals. Onto the queue!
I like the SB, but am not, unlike other NoiseNarcs, in love.
Oh, and the Black Dub debut album, esp, “Love Lives” and “Surely.”

Nicki Minaj! Pink Friday! I’ve done a complete 180 on her and “Monster” since last week. Also, some people seem to like the new Rihanna.
Other stuff I may or may not have actually listened to:
Stars – The Five Ghosts
Karen Elson – The Ghost Who Walks
Mates of State – Crushes
Gorillaz – Plastic Beach
Club 8 – The People’s Record
Yeasayer – Odd Blood
Frightened Rabbit – Winter of Mixed Drinks
Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. – Horse Power EP
Ugh. Just lost my response to this, so to sum: Basically, boo for making me listen to more albums. Gorillaz is already on the list. Despite my promise to give a good listen to all the recommended albums, there’s no way I’m listening to the Yeasayer. You don’t piss on an electric fence twice.
And… glad you 180ed on “Monster” but I think Pink Friday is promising but not anywhere near consideration for best of anything.
Look electro-snob, Yeasayer’s album is uneven but it’s highs are higher than a lot of the other albums’ highs on this list (though the lows are highly skippable)
You know I’m voting for STARS! Just to piss you off. That’s the only reason.
Is electro-snob a new form of Israeli pop trance? Fine, since I haven’t listened to the Yeasayer except for that incredibly overrated video, I’ll give it a listen. You can expect a complainy email shortly.
I’m alarmed that Stars, via you, Kat, and Matt could make an appearance on our top ten. Don’t think I’m above putting my thumb on the scale.
