Yellow Humphrey: Perfect weather music

Yellow Humphrey's Featherweights

If you’re in Philly, you’re experiencing what the Bay Area experiences 200+ days a year: absolutely perfect weather. In Philly, we get 10 of these. In a good year.

Is it any coincidence that Yellow Humphrey are having a record release show for their debut Featherweights on such a perfect day? Leadsinger Gretchen Lohse first sent me “Low Roses” on April 4th (high 79°, no humidity), and I complained bitterly about having to listen to its thrilling, vernal charms on a beautiful day… in an office. And Featherweights really is the perfect complement to a gorgeous spring day: as light as the title, a folkcountry touch, Gretchen dancing around notes like Zooey Daschenal with the fullness of Neko Case, and a fulsome ratio of the melancholy that all liminal seasons contain. One day, spring too shall pass.

So take note, Philadelphia: you only have eight days of perfect weather left. And quite a few of them should be spent with Yellow Humphrey.

Show Spotlight: Low TONIGHT (4/25) at the First Unitarian Church Sanctuary

Five reasons to go see Low tonight at the First Unitarian Sanctuary:

1) Although not a return to “form,” Low’s new album C’mon is a return to excellence. Although they’ve moved on from the utter bareness of their early albums, the progression into their new, lusher sound has reached jawdropping maturity.

2) Tonight’s rain is actually a reason to go: temperatures and humidity will drop enough to not make the First Unitarian into a sweatbox.

3) The First Unitarian Church Sanctuary. The best place to see music for cheap in the city by seven country miles. Especially when #2 is in effect.

4) The timbre of Alan Sparhawk’s voice.

5) The unearthly warmth of Mimi Parker’s.

Ticket Giveaway: Wye Oak at Johnny Brenda’s Friday, April 15th

Jerry Seinfeld once asked, “What’s the deal with bands from Baltimore?” By all rights, bands this great (Lower Dens, Beach House, Wye Oak, etc.) should be from Philly. But, alas, they’re not. Next best thing? Getting to see Wye Oak’s darkly beautiful act live. For free. In Philadelphia.

To win two tickets to see Wye Oak at Johny Brenda’s on April 15th (with Noise Narcs’ fave and fellow Baltimorians Secret Mountains opening), like us on Facebook and then email us at noisenarcs@gmail.com with “Move the Good Parts of Baltimore to Philly” as the subject. All emails must be received by Tuesday, 4/12, and we’ll announce the winner Wednesday morning.

Go see Ben & Drew from Blood Feathers tonight (w/ Juston Stens and Hacienda)

If you told me Blood Feathers played a bad show, I’d be glad to call you a filthy liar. Ben & Drew are opening up for Philly’s own Juston Stens (previously posted on here) and San Antonia’s Hacienda tonight at the North Star. Hacienda turn the early ’60s dial a tad up from the Black Keys’ level, mostly to great effect, as in the Beach Boys-esque, “I Keep Waiting.” And really: do we need any more reason to go to a show after the words “Blood Feathers”?

PS I’ve heard a four track demo of new Blood Feathers tracks, and boy are they scrumptious.

Listen to Timber Timbre’s Upcoming LP for Free!

Just a heads-up that Creep On Creepin’ On, scheduled for an April 5th release, can be heard for free HERE [updated with the correct link]. I favorably reviewed the Canadian ghost-folk outfit’s 2009 self-titled debut back in Noise Narc’s early days, and Creep On Creepin’ On, as the name might suggest, continues the same theme with references to death, seances, madness and magic spells, but with a few extra instruments thrown in here and there (like the morose sax at the end of the title track or the demonic cello/sax/violin combo in “Do I Have Power?”).  On a first impression, it sounds like some tracks veer more towards a horror movie score sound (Swamp Magic), while others will make you want to slow dance like it’s the zombie prom.  I like it.

Pre-order Creep on Creepin’ On here or here.

Also, it looks like they’re only making three US stops between Ontario and Europe, but one of those is Philadelphia’s World Cafe Live, April 12.

Although Philadelphians don’t understand irony, we do understand free tickets

The Onion, who just recently launched in Philly, are doing a ticket giveaway for some show we might have talked about a little bit. Namely one sponsored by this blog and featuring the excellent Cozy Galaxies, Grubby Little Hands, and Bridge Underwater.

Enter now at The AV Club’s site.

And special thanks go to Sly Fox (and Suzanne) for their green room consideration, the wonder that is Odyssey x2 IPA, and for helping make Philly’s beer scene so kickass since 1995.

Philly’s music scene is more than just Kurt Vile (even if he tries hard to make it seem that way)

Kurt Vile has his hands in a lot of Philadelphia pies

That Kurt Vile record? Oh my gawd. The best Philly record in roughly forever. If you’re previously familiar with Vile, you’ll recognize the same juke that Deerhunter pulled with Halcyon Digest: the sound got less aggressively “weird,” but underneath the shinier veneer is an intensified strangeness: a musical force that rips you apart while maintaining eye contact. If you’re just joining the Kurt Vile freak train (of course it’s not because of Pitchfork’s BNM. No, I know. You’re not a cog in Pitchfork’s culture machine. I believe you.): 1) yes, that’s his given name, and 2) welcome to the party.

And one hell of a big-tent party it is. Not only did Vile play in one of my other favorite Philly bands of this millennium (The War on Drugs), in the past year he also contributed to J Mascis’ excellent new album (see his work below on the amazing “Not Enough”), inspired the below homage track from Shai Halpern’s solo project Sweet Lights (also excellent), played with Thurston Mooore, opened for Pavement, signed to Matador, and to top it all off went back in time, hung out with caveman, and invented music.

Cozy Galaxies, Grubby Little Hands, and Bridge Underwater $10, 3/19 8:00 PM @ The M Room, 15 W Girard

But, despite appearances, Kurt Vile doesn’t have his hands in every awesome Philly indie rock band. Need proof? Tomorrow we’re throwing down with three of our absolute favorite Philly bands, and Kurt Vile plays in none of them (yet). Join us for our show with Cozy Galaxies, Grubby Little Hands, and Bridge Underwater at the M Room, tomorrow night (3/19) at 8 PM. The internet can’t be wrong: So far, City Paper‘s Critical Mass, The New Philadelphia, and The Swollen Fox have picked it for their featured show of the night (take that, Godspeed You! Black Emperor).

Announcing Noise Narcs Show: March 19th with Cozy Galaxies, Grubby Little Hands, and Bridge Underwater

More on this–and the bands–later, but a month from tomorrow we’ll be throwing down with three of our favorite Philly bands. Really: we couldn’t be more thrilled to have all three bands on this lineup. Even if we weren’t involved, I’d call this show can’t miss*.

* It has been said by some that I also turn thirty suspiciously close to this date, to which I say: bullshit. Thirty is too old to run a music blog. Also, 15.

Neutral Milk Hotel’s Magnum to play ATP in Ashbury, NJ

Well, there’s no way to not get excited about this. I’m not the festival type; I get sick of hearing music by hour four (my desire to hear Can’s six hour shows notwithstanding), but goddamn! Jeff Magnum!

Pitchfork has the dish:

Neutral Milk Hotel mastermind and notorious recluse Jeff Mangum … will perform at the Portishead-curated All Tomorrow’s Parties festival I’ll Be Your Mirror, which takes place in the Jersey shore town of Asbury Park September 30 – October 2.

Mangum’s performance takes place on the first day, and only those who purchase three-day passes to the festival will be able to attend. A press release notes that Mangum will also perform the Monday after the festival, October 3, at Asbury Park’s Paramount Theatre.

Portishead themselves will perform on the final two nights of the festival– the band’s first East Coast shows since 1998. Other acts announced for the fest so far include Shellac, Chavez, Cults, and the Album Leaf.

The rest of the lineup (minus Shellac, who have the most delightfully hateful song of all time) is pretty yawntastic. But you saw the words “Jeff Magnum” in there, right?

Upcoming Shows: Blood Feathers w/ Birdie Busch, Cozy Galaxies

In the next two days, some of Noise Narcs’ favorite Philly acts are playing in Philly. And both have some Noise Narcs connection. And man are we excited.

Tomorrow, 1/20, a Drew Mills and Ben Dickey of Blood Feathers perform a rare, stripped-down set at Philly’s intimate Tin Angel, featuring “material from the Blood Feathers songbook as well as a few surprises.” I wonder who suggested that a stripped-down set at the Tin Angel? And more importantly: Ohboyohboyohboy. Sounds like new material to us. As if that weren’t enough of a draw, charming-as-all-get-out Birdie Busch co-headlines. [Tickets]

Blood Feathers, “Sea Legs” [Buy]

Birdie Busch, “Joey” [Buy]

And tonight, Philly’s Cozy Galaxies (who recently got both WXPN and Philebrity love, not to mention releasing a new video, right ) play at Kung Fu Necktie with Secret Mountains, Clean Equations and Giant Mind. Cozy Galaxies should be no stranger to the Noise Narcs audience, but Baltimore’s Secret Mountains probably need some introduction. Coming from the same rich vein as fellow Poe-citiers Beach House and Lower Dens, they’re a band I’d keep a very close eye on. Starting tonight. Oh, and speaking of Cozy Galaxies, someone floated a rumor that they might be playing a gig on March 19th as well…
