Video: Broken Bells, "The Ghost Inside"

That Broken Bells video I told you about is here.  It’s no Gaga-rotesque masterpiece, but I like it.  Turns out that those “difficulties” Mercer hinted about start with some kind of interstellar EZPass.

Makes me think at first of that scene from La Locataire when Polanski says, “If you cut off my head, what would I say? ‘Me and my head’ or ‘Me and my body?’  What right has my head to call itself me?”  But then, somewhat disappointingly (and therefore ironically?), it turns into kind of Twilight Zone cliche.

I sort of like how it plays on Mad Men, with the Draper stand-in fantasy offering a martini that never quite reaches her grasp, but I think it would have worked better if the setting had been a bit more 1960’s “space-age” retro.

What do you guys think?

I don’t know. I don’t love music videos in general; never have (except some fun ones at the inception of music videos, which I hate to say online that I witnessed). I agree with your analysis, though–the postapocalyptic universe here makes little sense.

  2. I like music videos (and songs) that tell stories, but the plot here is mainly just the visual pun (it’ll cost an arm and a leg) which sort of spoils it as a metaphor for prostitution, I think. And the visual style, as we’ve said, is incoherent. So, I’ve changed my mind. I don’t like it.

Have you seen the video for OK Go, “This Too Shall Pass”? It’s a lot of fun.

I gotta agree with Cydney: my love of music vidoes probably ended with my 20s. Now my only use for them is posting songs on Noise Narcs when I can’t be bothered to find the mp3.

    What’s your favorite music video?
