Josh Ritter, So the World Runs Away (“Rattling Locks”); The Roots, How I Got Over (“Right On”); Natalie Merchant, Leave Your Sleep. Maybe that last one boots me from the “cool” category, but this was an ambitious album. NM put music to 25 British and American poems from the 19th and 20th centuries, and worked with over 100 musicians to make it happen. Its sound is big and beautiful, so respect.

10LCD Soundsystem, “Dance Yrself Clean”A strange album for me–I actively disliked a lot of stuff on it. But some tracks I found quite good, like this one.
09Dean & Britta, “I’ll Keep It with Mine”A truly lovely cover. Uses the power of Auto-Tune for good.
08Arcade Fire, “Modern Man”
07Gil Scott-Heron, “Me and the Devil”
06Josh Ritter, “Rattling Locks”This one kind of hits me in the gut. In a good way.
05Glasser, “Apply”Standout track on a “meh” album. But it’s a debut, so I have hope.
04Broken Bells, “The Ghost Inside”
03Sleigh Bells, “Crown on the Ground”
02Black Dub, “Surely”A powerful, spare track. Executed masterfully by Lanois, Blade, and Whitley (that voice!)
01Jónsi, “Go Do.”Closing out 2010 on an exuberant note.
