Matthew Simone: Top Albums of 2015

Philadelphia, PA

Continuing the every other year trend, it was a fantastic year for music. Filling out the back end of the list was an impossible challenge and many that were left off as even honorable mention, could have easily made the list in previous years. The fact that I spent hundreds of hours listening to music and 30 minutes on the reviews is a travesty, but I got the important part right. I thoroughly enjoyed the listening and really appreciated a lot of the add-ons to the list from other listeners. I thank you all for another year of contributions to expanding my musical horizons. Kudos to the Noise Narcs.

top ten albums

10Jamie xx: In Colour

Lush and dense with enough creative flourishes to distance him from the rest of the house djs.

03Kendrick Lamar: To Pimp a Butterfly

Could there be an album more vital and necessary to the current state of America?

02Tame Impala: Currents

With impeccable production and vision Kevin Parker takes psychedelic rock to places it’s never been before.

01Alabama Shakes: Sound and Color

Funky grooves and soul that bounce from Athens, Alabama to outer space and back again. It would have been easy to head down the road of the soulful blues revivalism that put them on the map, but the Shakes meandered off and found new horizons. This album is full of surprises.

honorable mentions

Holly Herndon – Platform, Grimes – Art Angels, Deafheaven – New Bermuda, Beach House – Depression Cherry, Panda Bear – Panda Bear vs. The Grim Reaper
