top ten albums

10Ryan Adams: 1989

Taylor’s version cracked our top 20 last year. How is this thoughtful (even if partially-winking) reworking not worthy of some notice?

08Car Seat Headrest: Teens of Style

Had I more time with this record, it might’ve finished even higher on my list. (Then again, there’s always the chance that it might’ve fallen lower. This is where it sits right now.)

06Houndmouth: Little Neon Limelight

An early-in-the-year release, I almost forgot this one. I’d like to think a few others did as well, but maybe I’m alone in my high praise for this album.

05The Decemberists: What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World

I know it seems dull on the surface, but I assure you this one’s just a slow-burner. (F’realsiesl!) “Make You Better” is probably my favorite song of the year.

04Ryan Adams: Live at Carnegie Hall

I seem to recall a bit of critical chatter, when this album was released, about it maybe ending up on some year-end lists. But, today, it’s nowhere (else) to be found. Nevertheless, despite all of his dabbling and (big) misses over the years, this set captures so much of what I first loved about Ryan Adams.

03Father John Misty: I Love You, Honeybear

J. Tillman seems like a brilliant guy whom I would absolutely despise if forced to sit and drink a beer with. But, still, on this release, he’s self-possessed, witty, and maybe even finding some lasting happiness. (You know, the things I hate.)

02D’Angelo & the Vanguard: Black Messiah

We all know how great this record is, I was just mistaken about its qualification for last year’s voting. If no one else votes for it this year, or if an editorial decision is made to exclude it (despite Pitchfork’s call), bump everything else up and make Destroyer my #10.

01Courtney Barnett: Sometimes I Sit and Think and Somtimes I Just Sit

I have trouble describing the simple genius of this record because it transcends almost any one-sentence summary. (However, that’s no reason for David not to go ahead and include the full album title.) [Whoops. Fixed. -Ed]
