Something that may or may not be self-evident: I made this list without looking at any other year-end Top 10/20/50 Lists. I spent the fall revising a couple of book chapters, which gave me a decent amount of time to listen to new albums but virtually no time to read any criticism about them. (Except for Lemonade. I read all the longreads about Lemonade, but that happened so long ago that it hardly counts.) I am not usually able to resist the temptation to look at how others have ranked things, so, for me, it’s important that, this year, my list is bizarrely pure. Uncompromised & untainted, on the one hand; uninformed & uncool, on the (more probable) hand. Either way: an unusual document. It will probably never happen like this again. Let’s hope we can say the same about 2016 as a whole. May it never happen like this again.
